Why Removing a Load-Bearing Wall Is More Than Choosing a Beam

When a load-bearing wall is removed, the structural load does not disappear—it has to be transferred through a new beam and suitable supports to the structure below.

The design therefore needs to consider the entire load path: the floor or roof framing supported by the wall, the new beam, the bearing or posts at each end, the floor structure below those supports, and ultimately the foundation or another adequate supporting element.

Existing conditions can substantially affect the solution. Framing direction, concealed beams, plumbing or ductwork, existing posts, foundation walls, and previous renovations may not be obvious from the finished room. This is why structural wall removal typically requires both accurate existing-condition information and structural engineering rather than simply selecting a beam size from the proposed opening width.
